With Workgroup Manager's departure in OS X Server for Yosemite, administrators are left without a GUI-based way to export users and groups out of Open Directory. While Workgroup Manager contained funcitons for both importing and exporting records, the Server app only has the ability to import records from properly formatted files (like the files that Workgroup Manager would generate). Thankfully, we have a full suite of "ds" commands on the command line to generate the files for us.
For Users:
It is well documented in Apple Support articles, the OS X Support Essentials Book, and on other sites about using the createinstallmedia command to make a full OS X Install disk. However, with Yosemite, while the command still exists and using the disk you created for an install works the first time, an issue seems to occur on older Macs (non-retina, circa 2012 and older) on subsequent installs.
The OS X Installer's standard operating procedure is to create/update the recovery partition and then restart into the recovery partition. However, on subsequent installs with a Yosemite-created full OS X Install disk, the recovery partition is not created or updated on older Macs. The installer also looks different, a customize button exists, and you able to turn off the installer components!
Before your start make sure the Remote MacMini Server is on the same network as the admin Mac that you are using to set up from. When the machine is on, the Setup Assistant opens and waits for setup to begin. You will setup the machine via Screen Sharing.
Setting up the Remote MacMini Server.
1. From another Mac, open a new window and look for the remote MacMini Server in the Shared computer list of the Finder sidebar. The Mac may be listed with a name generated from the computer model. I.E. MacMini 90827816738182.
If You noticed, the newest version of Safari in OS X Yosemite defaults to only displaying the domain name of the website you are visiting, rather than the complete URL that many users have long been accustomed to seeing. If you’d like to change back to how most web browsers have behaved and display the complete website URL, you can make a quick settings change in Safari to do this.
Note: You would may need to be beyond the root level of a website to see the difference. Assuming you are, the change is immediately visible in the URL bar as the complete URL is now printed again, letting you know exactly what the URL of the website is.
Suitcase Fusion on Mac OS X fails to launch with the error “Could not open the Font Vault at the location: Users/username/Library/Extensis/Suitcase Fusion/Suitcase Fusion.fontvault”. This happens when Suitcase Fusion tries to launch after a power failure or when the computer stops responding. It can also occur after upgrading to a new version of Suitcase Fusion or if your font vault has become damaged.
Solution
1) Open /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor and type “FMCore” into the Filter search box. If the FMCore process is running, then select it and click the “Quit Process” button. When the confirmation dialog appears, click “Force Quit”. If FMCore is not running then simply proceed to the next step.
2) Navigate to: [Macintosh HD]/Users/[UserName]/Library/Preferences/ and remove the following files:
• com.extensis.SuitcaseFusion.db
• com.extensis.SuitcaseFusion2.plist (Suitcase Fusion 2)
• com.extensis.SuitcaseFusion3.plist (Suitcase Fusion 3)
• com.extensis.SuitcaseFusion4.plist (Suitcase Fusion 4)
• com.extensis.SuitcaseFusion5.plist (Suitcase Fusion 5)
• com.extensis.SuitcaseFusion6.plist (Suitcase Fusion 6)
NOTE: In OSX 10.7 thru 10.10: In the Finder, hold down the Option key and choose Go > Library to reveal this hidden directory.
